Many of the hill towns of Tuscany and Umbria owe their existence to their origins as fortified towns, most often to keep nasty people like the Pope or Germans at bay. Some, like Perugia, also have significant underground portions, as seen here, which have been incorporated to varying degrees into the life of the city itself.
